End the Exception

The Business Human Challenge: 1.5 Million Americans are legally enslaved through a loophole in the constitution. To this day, the 13th Amendment includes an exception clause that still allows slavery to be used as punishment for crime. This exception was used as the legal basis for Black Codes and convict leasing during Reconstruction and continues to be cited to defend the exploitative use of prison labor today. How do we bring National attention to the issue of legalized slavery in America?

The Creative Solution: Join forces with Worth Rises as they fight to #EndTheException and abolish slavery for all with “Except For Me”,  a digital campaign uplifting the voices of those who have suffered under the exception. The campaign was published as an online video series that ran from Labor Day to Constitution Day 2022, ending in an on-site activation encouraging congressional leaders to take action on the Abolition Amendment.

The Results: As a result of the “Except For Me” campaign effort, 13 new congress members signed on to back the Abolition Amendment, and in the mid-term elections immediately following, 4 new states voted to abolish slavery once and for all.
